In June 2006 I took part in Big Arts Week. This is an annual arts initiative which has been running since 2002. Professional artists are invited to volunteer time and share their skills to inspire local children in primary and secondary schools throughout the country.

I was paired with Llangedwyn primary school in Mid Wales, and for a week I taught  letter design and stone carving techniques to the forty two pupils.

The stone suppliers Shropshire Stone and Granite kindly donated some off-cuts of sandstone which were soft enough for the children to carve with ease. We used the pieces of stone to form the basis of a poetry path leading up to the pupils’ outdoor storytelling chair.

Each one of the older pupils carved a letter of the words ONCE UPON A TIME IN A FARAWAY LAND and the younger pupils each carved an imaginary creature to be set alongside the words.

I thoroughly enjoyed the week and I think the pupils and staff of Llangedwyn Primary School found it a very positive and rewarding experience. One pupil was so enthusiastic about the letter carving that the school bought him his own tools, for which he made a satchel to attach to his bike! Perhaps a future letter carver in the making.
